The best way to amuse children during the holiday season is with some entertaining games and activities. They'll have a great time and learn festive traditions that they can later pass down themselves.
Games:
There are traditional objects and greetings used in the Kwanzaa celebration which represent the spirit of Kwanza. This is a match game which teaches children to learn the African names and meanings for these traditional objects. A grown up should lead the game, with the children sitting in a circle on the floor or at a table.
What you need:
- The flash cards -- one for each child and one for the adult leader. Write the name of the child on the back of their set of cards.
- A poster with images of each card
- Stickers or treats for rewards
Instructions:
- Distribute the cards to each child.
- The poster should be laid flat on the floor or on a table.
- The grown-up holds up a card and says the name.
- The grown-up points to a child and asks, "can you say that?"
- If the child is successful, the grown-up then asks the same child, "can you place it on the poster over the same picture?"
- If the child is successful, they get rewarded with a sticker or treat.
- At the end of the game, the child who got the most cards correct is declared the winner.
- The game can be made more difficult by playing against a timer.
Activities:
Kwanzaa may only come once every winter, but you can make the memories last all year by framing your favorite photograph. Surround cherished holiday photographs with these dazzling stars and bright mountains.
What you need:

Instructions:
- Print out two copies of the frame. Allow to dry.
- Print out Kwanzaa picture frame embellishments on sticker paper or regular paper. Allow to dry.
- Using scissors or a cutting tool and cutting mat, cut along solid lines on each piece.
- Using a ruler as a guide, run the backside of a butter knife firmly along dotted lines on all pieces.
- Fold the Kwanzaa picture frame front at a 90-degree angle from the dotted horizontal line that divides the grass from the night sky. Help the folds that form the tri-colored 3-D mountain scene so that they appear as shown.
- Glue a photograph behind the circular frame opening so that it is centered.
- Glue the second, non-cut frame copy to the back of your frame to help support it.
- Glue or stick embellishments to the frame as you like.
- Allow to dry.
